Ronnie Harold Surgeon Sr., husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin, community activist, and friend, was born to Waymon and Mae Surgeon on January 14, 1953, at L. Richardson Hospital in Greensboro, NC and transitioned to his eternal life on March 18, 2024.
Ron lived his life daily with a purpose from a very young age. He graduated from James B. Dudley Senior High School in 1971 and furthered his education at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University where he received a bachelor’s degree in political science which led him to his first career job as a former Deputy Sheriff of Guilford County. He also obtained a AA Criminal Justice Certificate from Guilford Technical Community College.
In 1973 Ron met the love of his life Brenda Neal and they were united in holy matrimony that same year. Ron was baptized at a young age and served faithfully at Anderson Grove Baptist Church in many capacities to include Trustee, Usher, Choir Member, Sunday School teacher, food service, finance committee, Boy Scout Volunteer, Pastor Search Chairman for 2nd pastor of Anderson Grove Baptist Church. He later joined Love and Faith Christian Fellowship where he was a member until God called him home.
Ron was also a very active and supportive volunteer for the Guilford County School System for many, many years. Being an active PTA supporter of Hairston Middle School as a co-sponsor of the annual Men's Breakfast. `
Ron's political career included his faithful and committed service to the Town of Pleasant Garden, NC. Ron served as Mayor Pro Tem of the Town from the year 2020 to present. Ron was always interested in listening and serving every citizen of the Town of Pleasant Garden NC. He also served as commissioner of the Pleasant Garden Fire Department.
Ron had an excellent work ethic. He was an owner/operator within the McDonald’s franchise, where he employed many people from his family and community.
He was a chief extraordinaire; he had a love for cooking and seeing people enjoy his food. This love led to an extensive career in food service management. His food service career included management positions at O’Henry BBQ, Holiday Inn Restaurant, Kentucky Fried Chicken, Krystal Burgers and Guilford County Schools, where he was employed at death.
Ron was preceded in death by his parents, Elder Waymon and Mae Surgeon, his oldest sister, Deaconess Anthnette Davis (Deacon Edmond Davis). Ron is survived by his loving and faithful wife of over 50 years, Brenda Neal Surgeon. To this union God blessed them with 2 children, Ronnie Surgeon II and Shannon Barfield (Michael). Five grandchildren, Paris, Amber, Angel, Michael Jr, and Trista. Three great grands, A.J., Aadeah, and Tuscalossa. Other survivors include Brother, Waymon Cornelle Surgeon, baby sister, Angelia (Maurice) Brown, and a host of nieces, nephew, sister in laws, brother in laws, relatives and friends.
As we celebrate the life of Ronnie Harold Surgeon Sr, we will remember him as an empathetic listener, a person who cared about all of our citizens, a person who believed in getting into “Good Trouble,” and a person who fought hard and never gave up, lived life with dignity and respect.
