Mr. James Allen Newman, Jr., 71, passed away Monday, September 29, 2025, at his residence in Greensboro, N.C.
Born in Roxboro, N.C. on January 16, 1954, the child who would be affectionately known by his family as “Jimmy,” was the oldest son of James Allen (Sr.) and Dorothy Chavis Newman, and the oldest grandchild to James and Amy O’Briant Chavis and Walter and Dixie Byrd Newman.
At age 6, young Jimmy moved with his parents and sisters Christopher Noelle and Bonnie Bridgette to Greensboro. Often referred to as “Newman” by classmates and friends, Jimmy played football, basketball and baseball while growing up and as a popular student-athlete at Walter Hines Page High School.
After his high school graduation in 1972, Jimmy served in the United States Army. Following his discharge, he enrolled at North Carolina A&T State University (NCA&T) and majored in political science. He worked at Federal Express (FEDEX) among other employers, and took great pride in his two children, Christopher Brown and Ariel Newman. Jimmy became a widower 25 years ago when his second wife, Yvonne, passed away.
His later years brought several physical challenges. Throughout his illnesses — including epilepsy, colon cancer, and becoming an amputee two years ago — Jimmy never gave up. He was able to pursue — and win — a legal settlement, and prided himself on his ability to live independently. He kept his mind sharp and engaged by completing dozens of crossword puzzle books each year and indulging his love of music - particularly R&B, Motown and the golden oldies - and his love of “cheat” foods such as Church’s Fried Chicken.
Hearing from old friends whom he grew up with in Ray Warren Homes and Woodmere Park always delighted Jimmy. And he often shared fond memories of spending time with his beloved cousin Stanley Chavis - who roomed with him back in their college days at NCA&T. But what made him smile most was the chance to reminisce about his loving parents and grandparents.
In addition to his children, Jimmy is survived by grandchildren Aniah Brown and Christopher Allen Brown Jr. Additional survivors include Jimmy’s siblings Christopher Noelle Newman Boozer, Bonnie Newman Davis, Sally L. Newman and Dickie Chavis (Anna) Newman; nieces Erin Danielle Stanley, Courtney Swepson and Abigail Newman. He also is survived by an uncle, Robert Chavis (Rose), Winfrey J. Grube, Nancy Bailey (George), Josephine Newman Love, Diane Chavis, and dozens of cousins.
Family and friends will gather to honor the life and legacy of James Allen “Jimmy” Newman, Jr. Monday, Oct. 13, 2025 at Gethsemane Missionary Baptist Church, 3701 Heath Ave. in Greensboro, N.C. Rev. Orinzie Hooks will officiate the service and Bishop Bernard Wright will deliver the eulogy.
Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. with a service beginning at 12 noon. Mr. Newman will be laid to rest on Tuesday, Oct. 14, 2025 in Salisbury National Cemetery, Salisbury N.C.
